How to stop UPI payments and game purchases when your child uses your phone for homework

· For Android phones

Your phone is also your wallet. Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and your bank app are a tap away, and the Play Store will happily sell game coins. When your child borrows the phone for homework, one wrong tap, or one "just this once" purchase in a game, can cost real money.

In short: turn on purchase authentication in the Play Store, keep your UPI PIN to yourself, and lock the payment apps while your child has the phone. The last one is the part Android doesn't do on its own.

Step 1: make the Play Store ask every time

Most surprise charges are in-app purchases in games: coins, gems, skins and passes. These go through the Play Store, so this one setting stops most of them.

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings, then Authentication.
  3. Turn on Require authentication for purchases and choose For all purchases through Google Play on this device.

Now every purchase asks for your fingerprint or Google password. Do this even if you do nothing else.

Step 2: keep your UPI PIN secret

Every UPI payment needs your UPI PIN, so it is a strong lock. The weak point is that children watch you type it. Cover the screen when you pay, and change the PIN in your UPI app if you think it has been seen.

Step 3: lock the payment apps during homework

Purchase authentication and a UPI PIN protect the payment itself. They don't stop your child from opening Google Pay, PhonePe or your bank app, seeing your balance and history, or pressing buttons they don't understand.

Android has no built-in way to lock these apps with a PIN while someone else uses the phone. App pinning (search App pinning in Settings) keeps one app on screen, which helps if homework only needs one app. Most homework needs more than one: a browser, a calculator, a class app.

What works: lock everything that isn't for homework

FocusEdge's Study Mode turns this around. Instead of locking each risky app, you pick the study apps and study websites once, and everything else is locked, including:

  • Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and other UPI apps
  • Your bank apps
  • The Play Store, so nothing can be bought or installed
  • Games, so there is nothing to buy coins in

When homework is done, you enter your PIN and the phone is yours again, exactly as it was. Settings stays locked too, so Study Mode can't be switched off from there.

If money has already gone

If your child already bought something by mistake, report it from your Google Play order history straight away: Google may refund purchases made in the last 48 hours. For a UPI payment, contact your bank or UPI app at once. Then turn on Step 1 so it doesn't happen again.

Next time they ask for your phone, you'll know it's homework.
